Peru: The Power of Citizens
Engaged and mobilised citizens can change the world we live in: four examples from Peru.
870 million people are starving worldwide and an additional one billion suffer from malnutrition. Back in 2010, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) discussed the then-new strategy to develop rural areas – and numerous initiatives have since arisen aimed at reducing hunger around the world.
The conference at Berlin’s Café Moskau on 11 December was a time to take stock and discuss how effective the new initiatives had been.
Federal ministers Dirk Niebel and Ilse Aigner attended to listen and take note of guests’ criticism and suggestions. Moderated by Dr Melinda Crane (Deutsche Welle TV), three panels drafted action plans for improving food security.
Kofi Annan, Chairman of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), kicked off the event as keynote speaker.
At the end of the conference, participants endorsed eight recommendations. Now the next steps are to open an annual dialogue with the German public on food security, and facilitate closer collaboration between the BMZ and AGRA.
